Let's Get Physical

No Internetz, these aren't my code words for Irish Boy when I'm in the mood.

Who am I kidding, with IF, am I ever in the mood? For all you doing timed intercourse, you know what I'm talking about.

This isn't about THAT at all.

It's about exercise! I know, I said the "E" word and believe it or not, I didn't even shudder!

Irish Boy and I have joined a gym in town and, wait for it, we've actually been going. I'm trying to go every other day at least. That seems to be manageable with my work schedule (read: crazy) and isn't killing me altogether. I am trying to go for a walk on the days that I don't make it to the gym so I feel like I'm actually doing something. I'm hopeful that in time all this activity will make a difference in my battle against PCOS and IR (insulin resistance).

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I often feel like I have to drag my sorry ass to the gym. But admittedly afterwards, I'm really glad that I did go. I love the fact that they have televisions above the treadmills so at least I can catch a favourite show while working out. What can I say, as a couch potato at heart, so this appeals!

The eating aspect of my new and improved healthy way of living is hit and miss. For the most part, I've been good. There have been challenges with a wedding this past weekend and the odd craving for sweets. But I am trying. My biggest struggle is with carbs. I don't want to give them up totally but limiting them seems like a good idea. That however, is easier said than done for me. If you have tips, please let me know. All out deprivation usually just pisses me off so I rebel. Yeah, I'm that kind of girl.

I also want to say thanks to all of the support and tips you gave me in my last post. Please, keep them coming! I'm not usually good at asking for help, but I know that in this realm of my life, I need it and I'm no longer ashamed to admit it. For all those offering to be buddies - bring it on! And let me know how I can support you.

So that's where I'm at! I still have moments of wishing that I didn't have to put my treatments on the back burner, but ultimately, I know I've made the right decision. Now I just have to get my ass in gear so that come January, I'm back in the game.

What are some of the things you eat/do when you get hit with naughty food cravings? What are some of the substitutes that work for you? Any hints would be appreciated!

PS - A very big THANK YOU to Elle for nominating me for the "I Love Your Blog" award! I felt the love from some other bloggers here so please check out my answers! But more importantly, visit Elle's blog to encourage her as she too takes a break to focus on some healthy priorities. Elle, I'm rooting for you - hopefully we can encourage each other!

Good for you! Keep up the excellent work! I find a good craving-curber is a cup of orange pekoe tea. And my latest yummy breakfast or snack is: plain organic yogurt topped with organic raspberries and organic walnuts! Delish! :-P

You are so dedicated it is inspiring! It is sad to admit but I have become a gym junkie over the past 2 years, i often get riduculed for going so much but it is a stress relief. & like you say, once you get yourself there you feel much better, and good for it after :)

I am not a skinny lady, just average, but i have SO much trouble with my eating - i can be good, but when i am bad, i am very very bad! i just eat and eat and eat... my trainer lady suggests that you have one 'naughty' day a week, apparently this helps with cravings, and keeps you on track because it is like a reward for being good... another good trick for me is like 6 small meals a day, and when you go to the gym have a protein supplement... OH OH my favorite dinner is veggie fritata - like a quiche but minus the pastry - and only use the egg whites, and put some lite cheese on top. try not to starve yourself then eat lots at nite.
I say this - but im not very good at sticking to it... i drink WAY too much coffee, and i chew WAY to much gum...
This year has been hard because i am not allowed to exercise as much, and to be honest i cant be bothered eating right, i am a sucker for sympathy food :)
Oh another trick is a food journal...being accountable for what you eat is suppose to help.

i used to eat:-
protein shake
gym
protein shake
6 egg whites
can of tuna
salad with chicken
30g raw almonds
meat and vegies

now it is more like:-
protein shake
gym
protien shake
latte
tuna
yogurt
microwave fish and vegies
latte
meat and vegies (two serves)

LOL - enough of me rambling! i wish you all the best with your diet and exercise!!!!

ps - i am bout to go get another latte!

So awesome that you guys both joined the gym and you are going!

Things that I have been eating?
- if you can't cut out carbs (and I certainly can't) go for whole grain pasta, bread.
- Eat breakfast. Oatmeal (the kind you cook), high-fiber cereal, egg white omelettes are all part of my repertoire.
- Fat free yoghurt with fruit for dessert.
- Apples. Tons of fiber, in season, and super filling. I eat at least 2 a day.

(Now that I am done sounding all sanctimonious, please bear in mind I had pie for breakfast yesterday and for lunch today. Yep -- pie.)

Good job!

TFO and I have also seriously ramped up our diet and exercise efforts recently. I also love carbs (and, frankly, hate whole wheat pasta - blech - so that type of trade off doesn't work for me). The best thing for me in terms of cutting back is tracking my food (I use www.dailyplate.com). Seeing the calorie count on various carbs and figuring out how much of something else I could eat in its place is what works.

I am also a big fan of cauliflower mashed with cream cheese as a "substitute" for mashed potatoes. But I will not lie and say that it tastes anything like mashed potatoes as many Atkins people try to believe. ;) It does have a similar texture though so it works for me.

It is nice to find a fellow lady who also does not love the gym. Seems like everyone these days say "Oh I really love working out. If I don't get to the gym I'm crabby".

Wow. Must be nice.

This makes me laugh, I just posted on this a couple weeks ago and was also channeling Jane Fonda. I remember my mom doing that work-out video! http://www.bustedplumbing.com/2009/10/chuck-norris-does-not-sleep-he-waits.html

I took my inspiration from Chuck Norris and his fists of awesomeness. I wish I had advice, but really I think as long as you can still watch TV (priorities!), I think you're good to go!

You go girl! Good luck with the weight loss. I just lost 40 pounds and I second the protein shake idea someone said earlier. If you mix it with non fat milk and ice in the blender before you work out, it really tastes pretty good. You can *almost* convince yourself it is a milk shake if you get the chocolate flavor. I am convinced this is why I started losing so much weight. I wasn't eating enough protein before my workouts and now that I do, it has really paid off. Good luck Keep us posted on the new, healthier you. Know that I am out here in the blogosphere cheering you on!

Great job on all of the working out. That is awesome. I need to get my butt off the couch, but the motivation issue is so hard. Keep up the good work!

Good for you two! I can barely get myself to work out at home let alone make the effort to go somewhere else to do it. I have zero eating tips for you as thats my biggest problem. Oh and you're welcome and also thank you, you made me all teary eyed. Geez, so emotional lately!

YAY for joining (and going to a gym)!!! I usually join then stop going after 2 weeks!!

The only advice I can give is MODERATION. I read an article yesterday about not eating carbs and the bad mood it can bring on (who wants that?) If you are really craving carbs, try to eat just a little then do something to get your mind off it. That usually works for me! I find if I try to ignore my cravings they hit me back ten-fold and I eat WAY more than I should!

I'm so impressed you're heading to the gym. I'm praying your motivation rubs off on me. You rock!

Go you! I hate going to the gym but always feel happy and satisfied that I effectively tortured myself. The channels at my gym blow, so I've been thinking about paying to download some of favorite shows on my iphone, so I can always be entertained. The boredom factor is what really gets me. Keep it up!

I am really trying to get myself refocused on dropping the carbs so that I can lose a decent amount of weight before I start cycling again in the spring. PCOS/IR sucks and it seems like it is really taking its toll on me now more than it ever has before. I'm trying to avoid taking Glucophage, but I think I might have to this time to at least get started. Ugh.
