Again, I swear this is not some sort of code that I use with Irish Boy to Get. It. On. I told you yesterday I wasn't going THERE. Keepin' it classy on this blog as always, Internetz!
So what's the deal with the fire? Well, it was our weekly adventure to the ND for some acupuncture today. Yes, our, as Irish Boy is now also enduring weekly pinnings and ingesting vitamins and herbs galore.
Starting this week, we're adding a moxa to the mix. What's a moxa you ask? Basically it's a small cone of dried herbs that you light on fire and it slowly burns on your body.
Oh you read me right.
Herbs. Fire. On body. FUN!
We couldn't actually experience this in the ND's office because they smoked so much that she was afraid of setting the sprinklers off. Awesome. So now we have to take them home and we're supposed to do them every other day at least. Our ND has also instructed that we purchase fresh ginger and cut a generous slice (approx. 3mm thick) to place on our body points first so that we don't burn ourselves. Does she know who she's talking to here?!
If you're actually interested in learning more - or are just intrigued - check out
here or here or here .
I can assure you this is going to be a comedy of errors as Irish Boy and I try and do these on each other (one at a time!) and try not to burn each other or our house down in the process.
But the best part? Well, let's just say that the moxa has a rather pungent aroma that is reminiscent to smells from a college residence.
If this doesn't get the neighbours talking, I don't know what will!

Before you made the comment about the scent being reminiscent of particular college dorm scents, I was thinking that herbs on fire might not be such a bad thing! :)
I'm doing moxa, too. But I'm not burning it directly on my body, with ginger in between. Instead, Mr. Jem makes tiny circles 1/2 an inch from specific points on my body. We do this until it gets too hot to stand.
The weird thing is that my respiration deepens when we do this. I definitely feel "something" stimulated, my circulation?
LOL! I can't believe you have to do it at home! I would totally chicken out! My acupuncturist does it in his office. And ditto on the nostalgia from the scent ;-).
hahaha!! Ok LOVE. IT! You're gonna have to tell me how this goes! How interesting! haha, PLEASE don't burn the house down!
Weird. I've never heard of it. I hope it helps. Make sure not to burn yourself.
I cannot wait to hear how this goes! :-p
Seriously, the shit we are willing to do. That said, I'm all for what ever works. Be careful!!
Hmmmm, never heard of moxa before. Sounds very interesting, though. I'd be willing to try anything.
You'll have to let me know how you like this. My former acupuncturist used this now and again on other clients and it smelled like someone set a roomful of permed heads on fire. Godspeed!
I've been interested in that but afraid to get it done. I also heard good things about cupping. Let us know how it goes!
I've never heard of moxa! OPI has a great nail polish colour called Come On Baby Light My Sapphire. It would go perfectly with your post ;)
I've never done it myself, but as you probably know, Zengirl is a huge moxa chick! I hope it makes you both feel great!
Sounds interesting! Let us know, what the results are!
Hope it goes well or that you have fun together trying to make it work. I love having moxa, I like the smell (which does stay in my clothes for days afterwards) and I like the sensation of the hotness and the swirling smoke, I've only had it done in the held-near-skin way too though.
Who hoo! I just did acupuncture yesterday, and was trying to think of even more exotic eastern medicine to try out... Thanks for the tip! I'm curious to see how it works for you. How are you liking the acupuncture? Where can you get the moxa?
As an aside, your turn for a blog makeover. For selfish reasons you need a blog button, so I can promote you on my site!
Sending positive vibes your way...
Thanks so much for leaving me such an encouraging comment on my blog when I was feeling down. It's so wonderful to have an IF sister like you!
It's awesome that you're doing moxa! It really warms you up, opens up your energy channels and gets the qi flowing the right way! But I've never done it the way you're doing it. Yours looks way scarier! I'm going to start another round soon too! Here's to "smoke gets in your eyes...and your nostrils, and your hair, and your clothes..." LOL! We can be smokin' hot chicks together! ;-)
I'm not doing Moxa yet, but all of my treatments are through my naturopath, right now I'm doing just herbs and acupuncture. Would love to know more about your
journey, will be reading more now that I have found your blog!!
Award Time!
